The children trafficked and used as camel jockeys in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are going to get over Tk 10 crore compensation in a month.As many as 879 juveniles who were trafficked to the UAE not before 1993 at their minor age and later brought back home will get the compensation. Each of the children would get a package ranging from $1000 to $10,000 depending on the medical damage they had been through.A delegation from the UAE yesterday held a meeting with Home Minister Sahara Khatun and handed over $1.44 million (about Tk 10.6 crore) that would be distributed through the district administration concerned.
The ill-fated children are going to get this compensation for their rehabilitation as per a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the governments of Bangladesh and the UAE on April 25, 2007. "This money will help their rehabilitation," said Sahara at a press briefing following a meeting on 'camel jockeys' compensation programme'.Hundreds of ill-fated children were trafficked to the UAE till 2005. They were tied up on the back of the camels during races as it was traditionally believed that the more frightened children scream, the faster the camels run.Many children received permanent injuries due to this brutal game of the UAE people. The Gulf nation banned the race in 2005 following persuasion by the UNICEF, movements by rights organisations and protests by the Bangladesh government. All the victims, now bellow 18 years, from 29 districts would get the compensation depending on the types of physical or psychological damage they had suffered. A joint board of the home ministries of Bangladesh and the UAE interviewed 700 claimants to fix the sum of compensation.
State Minister for Home Affairs Sohel Taj said no children from Bangladesh are now being used as camel jockeys. "Nothing can compensate the damage of those ill-fated children," he commented. Now the UAE race lovers use a kind of robots instead of minor children tied up on the hunch of the camels.

বাংলাদেশের যেসব শিশু এক সময় সংযুক্ত আরব আমিরাতে উটের জকি হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে, তাদের জন্য সেদেশের সরকার প্রায় দশ কোটি টাকার ক্ষতিপূরণ দিয়েছে. আটশর বেশি শিশুর জন্য ক্ষতিপূরণের এই অর্থ ঢাকায় বাংলাদেশের স্বারাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রী সাহারা খাতুনের কাছে হস্তান্তর করেন সংযুক্ত আরব আমিরাতের একটি প্রতিনিধিদল. উটের দৌড়ে জকি বা সওয়ারী হিসেবে ব্যবহারের জন্য বাংলাদেশসহ বিভিন্ন দেশ থেকে একসময় শিশুদের মধ্যপ্রাচ্যের বিভিন্ন দেশে নেয়া হতো, কিন্তু আন্তর্জাতিক চাপের মুখে আমিরাত সরকার শিশুদের এই কাজে ব্যবহার নিষিদ্ধ করে. বাংলাদেশ সরকারকে ক্ষতিপূরণ দেয়ার এই প্রক্রিয়ায় জড়িত ছিল জাতিসংঘের আন্তর্জাতিক শিশু সংস্থা ইউনিসেফ. সংস্থার একজন কর্মকর্তা বিবিসিকে জানিয়েছেন, ১৯৯৩ সালের পর থেকে যেসব শিশু সংযুক্ত আরব আমিরাতে উটের জকি হিসেবে কাজ করার পর ফিরে এসেছে মূলত তারাই এই ক্ষতিপূরণের অর্থ পাবে.
ক্ষতিগ্রস্থরা যাতে এই অর্থ তাদের শিক্ষার ব্যয় নির্বাহ করে নিজের পায়ে দাঁড়াতে পারে তার ওপরই জোর দেয়া হবে.
পাঁচ বছর বয়সে ঢাকার দোলাই খাল থেকে দুবাইতে পাচার হয়ে গিয়েছিলেন সজীব মিয়া৻তিনি বলছেন, এই ক্ষতিপূরণের অর্থ তিনি তার চিকিৎসার কাজে ব্যয় করতে চান.
